Meet the Honorees

Catholic Charities on Onondaga County is proud to recognize the following individuals for their exceptional contributions to our community.

Most Reverend Bishop Douglas J. Lucia
2024 Recipient of the Bishop’s Award

Ordained a priest of the Diocese of Ogdensburg on May 20, 1989, Bishop Lucia became the Eleventh Bishop of the Diocese of Syracuse on August 8, 2019, following his ordination and installation held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse. A native of Altona, New York (near Plattsburgh), Bishop Lucia served the Diocese of Ogdensburg in numerous capacities, including Judicial Vicar, Director of the Office of Worship, Vocations Director, and Secretary to the Bishop. Additionally, he held various pastoral roles as Pastor and Administrator. During his tenure in Syracuse, Bishop Lucia has navigated challenging decisions, including the implementation of Chapter 11 reorganization and other complex matters concerning parishes and schools. Despite these complexities, Bishop Lucia has diligently dedicated himself to visiting every parish within the Diocese. He has also visited all 21 Catholic Schools, engaged with numerous Catholic Charities sites, and spent time at Joseph House and Emmaus Ministry. These are merely a few examples of the countless ways Bishop Lucia has generously shared his time and talents with the faithful of Syracuse. Bishop Lucia’s faithful leadership positively impacts the entire Syracuse community. In his personal time, Bishop Lucia finds solace in the outdoors. He takes pleasure in exploring the scenic beauty of the seven-county Diocese that he now calls home. Additionally, he maintains a connection with his roots by periodically returning to Altona to visit his 96-year-old father and other family and friends. Even amidst the demands and complexities of his position, Bishop Lucia remains unwavering in his commitment to the motto adopted at his Episcopal Ordination: “In the Name of Jesus,” guiding all his actions.

Dr. Andrea Shaw
2024 Recipient of the President’s Award

A native of Upstate NY, Dr. Shaw is a dual-trained internist and pediatrician, serving as the medical director for Upstate University Hospital’s Center for International Health — a cornerstone of health equity for vulnerable refugees in Syracuse. Dr. Shaw provides compassionate care for many of the children of refugees who resettle in Syracuse, whose families are often fleeing violence, persecution, and other hardships. Dr. Shaw has provided medical care and relief to countless families who have come through the Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement program. She oversees weekly wellness clinics at the Refugee Resettlement program, offering blood pressure and diabetes screenings for new arrivals – many of whom have undiagnosed conditions. This clinic grew out of her efforts to screen refugees for COVID during the pandemic. For more than a year, COVID screening clinics were conducted weekly at Northside CYO by Dr. Shaw and her team at Upstate, working in concert with Catholic Charities’ multilingual Peer Navigators. More than 1,000 individuals were screened. Once COVID vaccines became available, Dr. Shaw partnered with Catholic Charities to provide COVID vaccination clinics, serving almost 1,000 people to date, with new clinics every month. Always the first to jump in, Dr. Shaw also created a clinic for Afghan Humanitarian Parolees during the Afghan resettlement effort and saw close to 75% of the Afghans who came to Syracuse. Throughout her partnerships with us, Dr. Shaw takes texts and late night phone calls about emergency health issues among the refugee populations, even making home visits when necessary. She has been at our side throughout every tough medical case. She is a critical, faithful contact for our Refugee Resettlement staff when they encounter children in need of medical attention. Dr. Shaw describes her role as a caregiver and as a member of the Syracuse community, which she works hard to ensure is a safe haven for the people in her care. The area’s resettlement rates rank among the highest in the country, and Dr. Shaw’s continued mission to serve the refugee communities is of tremendous value to countless lives. Dr. Shaw, who first became involved in helping refugees through her church during high school, encourages fellow Central New Yorkers to “keep your mind and heart open” to the refugees they may meet in grocery stores, in places of worship, or even in waiting rooms of doctor’s offices.
